Geometric Lighting – Retro Lighting for your Home

Keep anything long enough and it’s sure to come back into style! Geometric patterns had been off our radar for such a long time, that its recent revival was inevitable. The trend is marked by the use of abstract shapes such as triangles, rectangles and squares and it seems now is their time to shine.

Geometric styles in furnishings and décor was popularised in the 1920’s and 30’s before its slow decline heading into the 40’s. Going much further back, the roots of the geometric style of art, can be found in ancient Greece. Heard of the Greek Dark Ages? Well, it is also known as the Geometric Period, to describe the period around 900 – 700 BC when the geometric style of art was thought to have originated.

Strangely, geometric designs were commonly used in funeral vases to either hold cremations or for use as grave markers. If that all sounds a bit gloomy, then fear not. In ancient Greece it was thought an abomination to mark one’s passing without a grand display and as such, these geometric vases showed that you were a respected and important person to many people.

On a lighter note, vases and jugs featuring this linear, crisp style were also notable features in Greece at grand symposiums that only admitted the aristocratic males of the time. Many of the jugs depicted scenes of men drinking or of Dionysus, the Greek God of the grape harvest and winemaking.
