How to Use Plinth Lighting in Your Kitchen or Bathroom

Plinth lighting has been a decking staple for years. It provides an unobtrusive but highly effective means to bring light and life you your outdoor areas. Nestling into the skirt of your deck, it’s barely even seen until it’s turned on. And then, wow! The whole area is tastefully illuminated. But what many people don’t realise is that plinth lighting isn’t only suitable for use outdoors. In fact, an increasing number of people are now using it in their kitchens and bathrooms. So, what do you need to know?

What You Need to Know About Using Plinth Lights in Your Kitchen or Bathroom

What are plinth lights?

Plinth lights are small, low-level LEDs that can be inserted into your kitchen and bathroom kickboards. The primary aim is decorative. But plinth lights can provide really lovely ambient lighting. And they make a great, dazzle-free alternative to the main light for late night bathroom visits – which is particularly useful if you have children.

What plinth lights should you choose for a kitchen or bathroom?

Kitchen Plinth Lights

To start with, you don’t need to find plinth lights designed specifically for internal use. Plinth lights usually come in ‘decking kits’. And this makes them an excellent choice for kitchen and bathroom use because you know that they will be safe to use where water may be present. They are available in a range of sizes – 15mm, 30mm, 45mm, and 60mm. And the larger the diameter, the brighter the light they will provide. You can also choose between white light, warm white light, and colour change lights, according to your preference. And if you’re working on a budget, you can usually find bargain plinth lights in the clearance section.

How do you install plinth lights?

Bathroom Plinth Lights

You can install plinth lights at any time. Most people choose to place them within the kickboards of their kitchen and/or bathroom suite. And it’s a relatively simple process:

  • Start by measuring the space and marking equidistant installation points.
  • Remove your kickboards and drill the right sized holes in the marked spaces. It’s usually a good idea to do this outside to avoid making too much mess.
  • Attach the plinth lights. All good plinth lights will come with instructions to tell you how to manage this.
  • Install the wiring. Again, instructions should be provided. But don’t forget to ensure that any loose wires are attached to the kickboard to avoid damage when replacing the kickboard.
  • Connect the wiring to your mains supply. Some plinth light sets come with a plug, in which case you may require an extension lead. Others may need an electrician for final installation.
  • For best results, many people also purchase a motion sensor kit or timer, to ensure the lights are always on when they’re needed.

Plinth lights can make a fabulous addition to any kitchen or bathroom. Creating a that look is decisively modern. And a feel that was designed for convenience.
