Is it a Good Idea to Have Matching Lights?

The way the interior of your home looks is very much down to your personal preference. You can go for coordinating, contrasting, or a wild eclectic mix. But one of the questions we get commonly asked is whether it’s a good idea to select matching light sets.

Matching Lights: What Do You Need to Know?
What are the benefits of selecting matching light sets?

One of the main reasons that we recommend matching light sets, like the Fathom series, where the ceilingwall, and table lights all share the same ivory cotton shades and swirling gold leaf adornment, is because it adds a sense of cohesion to a room. And this can stop the space from feeling too ‘busy’ and overwhelming. Which is particularly important in rooms intended for relaxation. It helps the lights to become part of the design of the room, rather than overly intruding.

What are the disadvantages of selecting matching lights?

In certain areas of design, matching lights may be considered boring. And ‘boring’ is rarely at the top of anyone’s design wish list! Especially for their home. But this can be avoided if you select your lights well. This copper geometric pendant light, for example, is bold and interesting, without being imposing. It’s available in a variety of forms, from single pendants to clusters. So, if you have a sitting-dining room, you could make a statement with a full-sized pendant light over your seating area, and a low-hanging cluster positioned above your dining table. Or select a table lamp, which carries the same geometric design, but flips it around, so you have a matching stand, with a contrasting shade. Matching lights are only boring if you use them badly.

Where do matching light sets work?

Matching lights can work in almost any room. It’s simply a case of finding the right design for the right room. While the lights in the beautiful Browne series might suit a bedroom or sitting room, they would look out of place in a kitchen. So, as long as you choose the right light for the right place, you can create an incredible impact.

Where shouldn’t you use matching light sets?

While we’re all for coordination and cohesion, it’s rarely a good design plan to use exactly the same lighting throughout your home. So, while the lights in your sitting room might match, we wouldn’t necessarily advise carrying the same design into your hallway or kitchen. It’s a much better idea to coordinate your lighting choices. Perhaps selecting the same colour scheme, metal type, or shape. So, you could try a matt black pendant light as a base for one room. Then move on to a fluted glass design in another.

Whether or not matching lights work for your home really is a matter of taste. If you like your spaces to seamlessly flow, then matching lights can be a great way to create the ambience you crave. Otherwise, feel free to mix it up, and choose the individual lights that give you pleasure.
