Places to use Pull Cord Lights

Pull cord lights are all about practicality.

They’re used for example — in instances where wall switches aren’t an option, or to enable light sources to have an isolated on/off switch.

But that doesn’t mean they can’t make a statement.

Here we take a look at where pull-cord lights can be best used for functionality — without ever compromising on style.

In the Bathroom

By far the most common place you’ll find pull cord lights, is in the bathroom.

This is primarily for safety reasons, in what can become a damp environment. Using a pull cord means there’s greater distance between you and the electricity source.

For this reason, bathroom lighting comes with its own rating system — an IP, or ‘Ingress Protection’ rating, which defines how well-sealed and protected the light fixture is against solids, dust and moisture.

Dependent on where in the bathroom you’d like to position your light — will determine the minimum IP rating you should be looking for. Different areas in and around your bathroom are classed as ‘zones’ 0, 1, 2 and 3.

In a nutshell — the areas closest to water (actually in the bath or shower) are classed as Zone 0. Any light fixtures within these areas must have a rating of at least IP67 — meaning they are protected against water immersion and even small particles of dust.

Extending to the area directly above the bath or shower, and up to 7 ft. 4 “ from the ground, is Zone 1. Within this area, it’s recommended that any lights should have an IP rating of IP65.

Zone 2 is the most common area for light installation in bathrooms and it consists of most space beyond the perimeter of the sink or bath. In these areas you’ll want to have a light with a rating of no less than IP44, meaning the fixture is splash-proof and safely enclosed from probing objects.

This classy chrome and glass bathroom wall light has an IP44 rating and comes on its own or as a pair, which, when placed on either side of a mirror, look exceptionally chic as well as providing extra light for practical tasks.

Create an art deco feel with this sleek, modern chrome and frosted-glass wall light, which exudes effortless style and ambience. This IP44 light is perfect for those nights you’re winding down in the bath.

In the Bedroom

The major advantage of having a pull cord light in the bedroom, is the option to have an isolated on/off switch right by your bedside.

They provide a perfectly positioned source of light for reading, and are also ideal if you’re short on space for table or floor lamps.

This beautiful chrome and glass wall lamp looks stunning within the bedroom as a night light. Illuminates both sides of the bed with one on either side, this elegant, yet modern fixture is also available in satin brass.

For any dressing table, this illuminated mirror with pull cord switch, is a stroke of genius.

With modern lines and LED lights — it teams aesthetic appeal with invaluable functionality.

Picture Lights

A picture light is used to direct illumination over such a small and specific surface area, it makes sense to have an isolated on/off switch.

They’re not necessarily something you’re going to be using all the time, but when you do, they’re there to do a job.

Which is not to say they’re purely functional either. Because well-placed picture lights can contribute to your overall mood-lighting in a room.

And whilst this light source can be controlled by a pull cord switch, more often these days you’ll find them with rocker switches.

This satin chrome picture light uses an LED bulb, perfect for highlighting your favourite piece of art — with the distinct advantage of being low on energy usage.

Further, LEDs bulbs are an ideal choice for picture lights because they stay cool and don’t emit harmful UV rays — so there’s no risk of long-term heat damage to your art.
