What to Look for When Choosing Bathroom Lights – with Elstead

Bathroom lighting can be difficult to get right. It needs to be practical and appealing. But most importantly of all, it needs to be safe and fit for purpose. So, what do you need to consider when choosing new lighting for your bathroom?

Three Things to Think About When Choosing Bathroom Lighting

The IP rating

IP stands for ‘Ingress Protection’ and it refers to a light’s resistance to water. The higher the IP number assigned to a light, the safer it is in a bathroom setting. As a general rule, bathroom lights should never have an IP rating of below IP44. This means that the lights are protected from sprayed water up to 60° from vertical. Ceiling lights like the Elstead Bath Ryde Flush and wall lights like the Elstead Morvah will deliver this degree of protection. However, if you are looking for lights to use directly above a bath, you will need to install products with a higher rating. The Elstead Welland, for example, has a rating of IP54. Lights used within a shower cubical would need to be at least IP65.

The lighting style

Just like the lights for any other room in the house, bathroom lights come in a full range of styles.

Ceiling lights

Ceiling lights are generally considered the practical bathroom choice. They’re not expected to look that good. Their role is simply to throw maximum illumination into the room. But when you select a design like the Elstead Quoizel Whistling light, it is possible to marry prettiness with performance. And if you really want to go big on the bling, if you have the space there’s really nothing stopping you selecting a light like the Elstead Kichler Crystal Skye.

Wall lights

Whichever room you choose to use it in, wall lighting is always good at creating a more relaxed atmosphere. That’s why lights like the Elstead Kichler Mona or Elstead Quoizel Kolt make such a useful addition to a family bathroom. They’re just the thing for a long evening soak, and a whole lot safer than candles.

Mirror lights

Until relatively recently, mirror lights all took the same boring form. But it’s now possible to jazz things up a bit. The Elstead Kichler Zolon light comes complete with an appealing geometric pattern. While the Elstead Quoizel Tranquil is a different take altogether, with its three separate bays.

The aesthetic

You may not be someone who likes matching sets. But if you want your bathroom to have a sense of cohesion, it can be a good idea to select lights that at least coordinate. So, you could choose a collection, like the Paulson, with its ribbed glass and chrome fixtures. Or you could simply marry similar styles together. Like brass and frosted glass? Try pairing the Elstead Quoizel Chance with the Swell wall light. Work with your theme and the results will be beautiful.

Choosing the right bathroom lighting can make an enormous difference to how you use the space. And with Elstead, you have all you need to make your bathroom feel complete.
